We encourage our people to express their faith in God, in the Community
Welcome to St James Presbyterian Church
St James Presbyterian Church has served the community of Newtown since 1882. Established at the time of the development of the Suburb, St James has responded to the changing needs of a changing community.
St James is more than a set of buildings that occupy the site at 235 Adelaide Road, Newtown. The focus of St James is "people".
- Ki Mai ki ahau,
- He aha te mea nui o te ao.
- Maku e ki atu,
- He tangata, he tangata, he tangata'."
Maori proverb that translates
- You say to me,
- What is the most important thing in the universe?
- I will reply
- "People, people, people'."

Within St James Presbyterian Church, various groups of people gather for a wide range of activities including worship, cultural activities, recreation and service activities.

This website is designed to show that at St James, the Work of God is ongoing and varied. While we are not intending to define all the activities that are part of the make-up of St James, it is intended to show some of the key elements of what we want to achieve and how we might do that.
At St James there are two congregations that worship regularly in the Church. They are
- English language Congregation of St James, and the
- Niue St James Congregation (Wellington Region)
Both are independent congregations in their own right and are recognised as such by the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. The Wellington community/congregation of the Ancient and Apostolic Catholic Church of the East - Parish of St George (Assyrian) also use the facilities although their Church is located in Glamis Ave, Strathmore, next to the Strathmore Shopping Centre.

This website focuses on the activities, roles and functions of the English language Congregation.
